Frequently asked questions
Trimlight’s standard residential channel measures 1.3″ depth × 1.85″ high. It tucks flush under the soffit so from the street it reads as a slim trim line — not a visible piece of hardware. The bulbs sit recessed inside the channel and protrude 3/8″ below for the all-angle glow described in the Lighting section.
More than 50 standard colors, plus custom color-match services. For Tennessee homes specifically, the colors we use most often: ivory (matches the soft-white painted-trim look common in Westhaven and McKay’s Mill), bronze (common on painted-brick and tan-trim homes in Brentwood, Forest Hills, Annandale), matte black (the dominant choice for modern-farmhouse builds with black trim — increasingly common across Williamson and Maury counties), warm cream (for plantation-style and antebellum homes throughout Maury, Marshall, and Giles counties), and natural aluminum (industrial and commercial installs). For unusual or vintage fascia colors, we can custom-match.
Yes. Every install is custom-fit to your specific home — eaves, gables, accent runs, dormer treatments. We measure on-site during your free design quote and cut channel to match your roofline dimensions exactly. No two Middle Tennessee installs look identical because no two homes have the same architecture. The patented Trimlight aluminum channel is offered in 50+ standard colors plus custom color-matching for unusual fascia shades.
Yes — Trimlight runs on safe 12V low-voltage power, ideal for residential use. Compared to 24V, 36V, or 48V systems, the lower voltage helps the system last longer because heat dissipation is easier. There’s no risk of an electrical-grade shock from a Trimlight bulb or channel.
Well-lit walkways, driveways, and home exteriors reduce stumbles and falls after dark and act as a deterrent. Tennessee’s longer dusk-to-darkness window in November through February (sunset around 4:40pm in mid-December) makes lit exteriors especially valuable for evening dog walks, kids coming home from school activities, and arriving home from work after dark. The system is also fully integrated with motion-trigger settings if you want certain scenes to brighten on movement.
Every year, thousands of homeowners are injured (and some killed) hanging traditional Christmas lights — primarily from ladder falls. Tennessee homes are particularly tricky: two-story rooflines with steep gables, complex dormer arrangements (the modern-farmhouse trend of the last decade), and the standard Williamson County two-story plus basement layout that adds elevation. Trimlight installs once, professionally, and you never climb a ladder for holiday decorations again. Your November and January Saturdays are yours.
Yes. The Trimlight system integrates with Google Home and Amazon Alexa. Download the corresponding skill from the Alexa or Google Assistant store on your device and follow the setup instructions. Once paired, you can turn the system on/off and adjust a handful of colors and dimming settings via voice command. For full color-picking and scene-building, you’ll still use the Trimlight Edge app — voice controls are designed for quick commands, not deep customization.
Yes. As long as your home WiFi is connected, you can program your lights from anywhere your phone has service. Useful for Tennessee snowbirds wintering in Florida, Nashville business travelers, and lake-house owners on Tims Ford or Normandy who want their primary residence’s lights running on a Williamson County schedule even while they’re elsewhere. The Edge app’s calendar function lets you set scheduled events months ahead, so you don’t have to touch the system manually at all.
Yes — the Trimlight Edge app works with any iPhone or Android device, and most Mac systems. It won’t work on a Windows PC. Multiple household members can each install the app on their own devices and control the system.
Trimlight is an app-driven technology — it works with iPhone, Android, and most Mac systems (since they run app-driven software too). It will not work directly on a Windows PC. The vast majority of our Middle Tennessee customers control the system from their phone, which is the design intent.
Yes, in most cases. The Trimlight system is designed to pair to your home WiFi for remote control via the smart app. However, we can’t guarantee a successful pairing on every network because of variables outside our control: router/modem type, firewall settings, signal obstacles, interference from other smart devices, etc. In Middle Tennessee, we’ve successfully paired with AT&T fiber, Xfinity/Comcast, Google Fiber (Nashville), local cable providers, and most rural WISP services. For homes with thick brick or stone construction (common in Brentwood and Belle Meade estates) we sometimes recommend a WiFi extender near the garage controller location.
Typically LED diodes with lenses fade or discolor over time from sun exposure. Trimlight’s residential lighting has no lens or covering — the LED faces directly out of the channel — which means Trimlight LEDs don’t fade, cloud, or yellow like many other exterior LEDs do. The residential bulbs also point down and slightly below the channel, which further protects them from direct sun. We have south-facing Tennessee installs (Williamson County and Forest Hills) running since 2019 with zero observable fade after 6+ years of brutal Middle TN summer sun.
Sometimes. If the fault occurs in the RGB components, only the affected bulb changes color or stops working. If the fault occurs in the data wire of an affected bulb, every bulb after it in the chain may stop working until the affected bulb is replaced. Either way it’s a quick repair — Northpoint Trimlight typically diagnoses and replaces within 3–5 business days of your call, anywhere in our Middle Tennessee service area.
Trimlight provides an industry-leading Lifetime Product Warranty covering the components of the Trimlight system for the life of those components — up to 40 years with proper use. The bulbs have a 50,000-hour lifespan. Running the system 24/7 dramatically shortens the lifetime because of heat dissipation, so we recommend a sunset-to-bedtime schedule. For Tennessee customers, Northpoint Trimlight is your warranty point of contact — we coordinate every warranty claim directly with Trimlight HQ on your behalf. Detailed warranty terms are available at trimlight.com under the warranty PDF.
The lifespan depends on how much you run it. Used exclusively during holiday seasons: 30–40 years. Used year-round at typical evening hours (sunset to bedtime): about 20–30 years. Run continuously 12–16 hours per day (except during severe summer heat): 7–8 years. Run 24/7: significantly shorter — heat dissipation matters. For most Middle Tennessee customers, the actual usage works out to about 4–6 hours per night, every night, including warm-white year-round plus holiday scenes — putting most installs in the 15–25 year actual-lifespan range. The bulbs themselves are rated for 50,000 hours of light use.
Trimlight comes with a Lifetime Product Warranty. Call Northpoint Trimlight in Franklin and we’ll schedule the replacement. Depending on the install location and labor warranty terms on your specific quote, you may or may not pay a small labor fee. The faulty product itself is covered under the manufacturer’s lifetime warranty for the full 50,000-hour lifespan. We coordinate everything — Trimlight HQ ships replacement product to us, our crew installs it at your home. (Reminder: Trimlight HQ is the manufacturer, Northpoint is the local dealer who installs, supports, and repairs. The two work in coordination on warranty.)
No — Trimlight HQ manufactures the system but doesn’t handle installation, support, or repair. Those services are exclusively provided by your local authorized dealer. For Middle Tennessee, that’s Northpoint Trimlight. We’re an independent business and are responsible for every install we complete from Franklin out to the edges of our 52-zip service area. Trimlight HQ supplies us replacement product for any manufacturer-defect warranty claims, and we install/coordinate the repair on-site. Warranty does not cover network connectivity issues, mobile app misuse, improper programming, or general app-functionality questions — those are usually a quick fix when you call us, but they’re not warranty claims.
Most Middle Tennessee installs are completed in a single day. Estate-scale Brentwood homes (Governors Club, Annandale, Witherspoon) with 400+ linear feet of roofline or multiple gables and dormers may run two days. Commercial installs for Cool Springs offices, downtown Franklin storefronts, or HOA-managed multi-family properties are scoped on a per-project basis.
Local Tennessee Christmas-light installation services typically charge $850–$1,400 per year for a Williamson County home — install in November, take-down in January, plus possible bulb replacements and storage hassle. Over 5 years that’s $4,250–$7,000. Over 10 years: $8,500–$14,000. A one-time Trimlight install ($4,500–$7,500 for most Middle Tennessee homes) typically breaks even at year 4–5 — and from year 5 on, you’re saving thousands while also getting Halloween, Easter, July 4th, Valentine’s, every Titans game day, and 300+ nights of year-round warm-white accent. The math tilts heavily toward permanent installation.
Some Trimlight dealers offer DIY kits, but choosing that path voids the lifetime product warranty because the install isn’t done by an authorized dealer. Beyond the warranty math, the safety math doesn’t work either — a typical Tennessee two-story home means a 28-foot ladder, complex gable geometry, and roofline elevation that ladder-injury statistics consistently warn against. Northpoint Trimlight’s authorized install for a Williamson County home runs about the same as one severe-injury ER visit.
No. The Trimlight channel is positioned beneath the soffit of your home, protected by the patented channel system. We don’t disturb gutters or drip edge — both critical for Tennessee homes that handle 50+ inches of annual rainfall plus the occasional tropical-system remnant. Gutters keep water away from your foundation, and we leave them alone.
Call Northpoint Trimlight directly. Your bulb is covered for up to 50,000 hours of usage under the lifetime product warranty. All Trimlight dealers offer at minimum a 1-year labor warranty; Northpoint extends additional labor coverage on most installs — confirm details on your specific quote. We typically dispatch a replacement crew within 3–5 business days anywhere in our Tennessee service area, from Franklin out to Waverly, Hohenwald, Lawrenceburg, or Pulaski. (Trimlight HQ is the product manufacturer and isn’t responsible for installation, support, or repairs — that’s all handled by your local dealer. Northpoint is that dealer for Middle Tennessee.)
Carefree. No annual install, no take-down, no storage, no replacement bulb runs to Home Depot. If you ever do need a bulb replaced, a new controller, or warranty service, just call Northpoint Trimlight in Franklin. We answer our phone — that’s the local-dealer advantage. We don’t outsource Tennessee service to a national call center.
Pricing varies by region and home complexity. For Middle Tennessee specifically: most homes (Franklin, Brentwood, Nolensville, Spring Hill, Thompson’s Station, Cool Springs, Nashville suburbs) run $4,500–$7,500 for a typical 150–280 linear-foot single- or two-story roofline. Larger estate-scale homes (Governors Club, Annandale, Witherspoon, The Grove at College Grove, Falls Grove, Forest Hills) typically run $7,500–$12,000. Rural homes in Hickman, Perry, Lawrence, or Wayne counties usually land $4,500–$6,500. Commercial work is custom-quoted. Every install includes design consultation, on-site measurement, materials, professional install, app setup and walkthrough, and the lifetime bulb warranty. Financing available with 0% APR introductory plans.
Typically mounted on an interior wall inside a garage or under a carport, plugged into a standard outlet. For most Middle Tennessee homes — Franklin, Brentwood, Nolensville, Spring Hill, Thompson’s Station — that means the garage. For rural homes in Hickman, Perry, Wayne, or Humphreys counties where attached garages aren’t always standard, we sometimes mount in a utility room, mudroom, or basement near the breaker panel. The box is roughly 8″ × 6″ × 3″ and runs cool to the touch.
Almost always yes, but most HOAs do require prior approval. Trimlight is widely accepted by Williamson County HOAs once we walk the board through how the system works — the channel is invisible by day, the lights are programmable for specific holidays, and Northpoint handles any service or repair quickly. Specifically for Tennessee, we’ve been approved by Westhaven, Berry Farms, Fieldstone Farms, McKay’s Mill, Ladd Park, Polo Club, The Grove at College Grove, Hideaway at Arrington, King’s Chapel, Falls Grove, Governors Club, Annandale, Witherspoon, Raintree Forest, Brenthaven, Concord Hunt, Tollgate Village, Bridgemore Village, Bent Creek, Wades Grove, Belshire — and dozens more. For homes in Forest Hills, Oak Hill, Belle Meade, or Hillsboro (Davidson County), we navigate city architectural review boards instead of HOAs. For downtown Franklin’s historic district, downtown Columbia, Pulaski, and Lynnville, we work through the local Historic Zoning Commission. We supply documentation packets for every approval process.
Trimlight backs every product with a lifetime warranty — a level of confidence other permanent-lighting systems hesitate to match. Most competitors will quote a 50,000-hour bulb life but stop short of an actual lifetime warranty. Trimlight’s products go through rigorous testing and the warranty extends through the full 50,000 hours of usage. In Tennessee specifically — where we throw humid 95°F summers, ice storms, tornado-adjacent severe weather, and the occasional 3″ hail event at every exterior install — having a system backed by a lifetime product warranty (and a Franklin-based dealer to honor it) is the difference between a lighting purchase and a lighting partnership.
Trimlight HQ pioneered permanent programmable color-changing lighting starting in 2010. Northpoint Trimlight is the authorized Trimlight dealer for the Franklin, Tennessee area, bringing the system to homeowners across Williamson, Davidson, Maury, Marshall, Bedford, Rutherford, Hickman, Humphreys, Lewis, Lawrence, Giles, Wayne, and Perry counties — 52 zip codes across roughly 50 Middle and South-Central Tennessee cities.
Very little. The Trimlight 3L bulb draws 0.9 watts each; the Classic draws 0.6 watts each. On a typical 200-linear-foot Middle Tennessee roofline (~50 bulbs), the whole system draws 30–45 watts — less than a single incandescent bulb. Most Northpoint Trimlight customers see about $5–$15 added to their monthly NES, MTEMC, Middle Tennessee Electric, or Duck River Electric bill running warm-white year-round at typical sunset-to-bedtime schedules.
Yes. Trimlight bulbs protrude 3/8″ below the channel, which means the glow radiates from more angles than puck-shaped or rectangle bulbs. That matters in dense Tennessee neighborhoods — Westhaven, Berry Farms, Burkitt Place in Nolensville, Tollgate in Thompson’s Station — where neighbors view your home from oblique angles, not just head-on. The 3/8″ protrusion is what gives the system its true holiday-light glow rather than the flat, washed look of recessed competitors.
Trimlight offers three bulb options. The Classic Bulb has 1 LED — the long-standing reliable workhorse. The 3L Bulb has 3 LEDs and is significantly brighter, matching our Commercial Bulb’s output. For most Middle Tennessee residential installs, we typically spec the 3L for larger estate-style homes (Brentwood Annandale/Governors Club/Witherspoon, Franklin Westhaven Highlands, Forest Hills) where the brighter punch reads better at distance, and the Classic for tighter rooflines and smaller-lot suburban builds.
Trimlight’s patented aluminum channel system is designed to match your roofline color and blend seamlessly. Wires are hidden inside the channel; bulbs sit recessed. From the street they’re hardly noticeable. For Tennessee homes specifically, we match the channel to your fascia color — typically ivory, taupe, bronze, or matte-black for modern-farmhouse builds (the dominant Middle TN style of the last decade). Painted-brick homes common in Brentwood and Forest Hills usually go bronze. We have 50+ standard channel colors plus custom color-match available.
60 max. For most Middle Tennessee homes, that’s plenty — your full Tennessee calendar (Christmas, Halloween, July 4th, Easter, Valentine’s, St. Patrick’s, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day) plus team scenes (Titans, Vols, Predators, Vandy, your local high school) plus warm-white year-round and a few custom scenes is usually 18–25 patterns. If you ever hit the 60-pattern cap, swipe left on the clock-icon list to delete the ones you stopped using.
Yes, but we recommend the timers don’t overlap. For example: create a calendar event for Tennessee Walking Horse Celebration week (Shelbyville, late August) running 7pm–11pm, then a daily warm-white timer from 11:01pm–5am for the routine glow. Same logic applies to Dickens of a Christmas weekend in downtown Franklin, Pumpkinfest, the Brentwood Tree Lighting, Mule Day in Columbia, or the RC-MoonPie Festival in Bell Buckle — calendar events override daily timers for those windows, then the timer resumes.
Yes. There’s a warm-white preset on the custom color palette screen, plus you can mix any custom white shade. For Middle Tennessee homes — particularly the historic stock around downtown Franklin, Columbia, Pulaski, Lynnville, and the painted-brick prevalence in Brentwood and Forest Hills — warm white (approximately 2700K) is the temperature we recommend nine times out of ten. Step out front, dim down to 30–40%, and you’ve got the same cozy tone as a classic incandescent.
Connect to the Trimlight app, press enter, tap the clock icon at bottom right. You’ll see your current saved patterns. Swipe left to rename or delete. We typically pre-save 8–12 patterns at install — Christmas classic, Christmas multi, Halloween, July 4th, Easter, Valentine’s, Titans, Vols, Predators, warm-white year-round, plus 2–3 custom for your specific Tennessee schedule (Mule Day, Dickens of a Christmas, etc.).
Trimlight’s RGB system can produce ‘pure white’ by combining red, green, and blue at full intensity. You can also dial in any custom shade of white from cool to warm. Our standing recommendation for Tennessee homes: step out to the curb after dark and compare the temperature to surrounding Williamson, Maury, or Davidson County homes. Most Tennessee architecture — brick fronts, Hardie board, painted-brick — flatters at the warmer end (around 2700K).
Up to 30 different colors in any single pattern, with up to 90 bulbs of each color. So you could run 90 red, 15 orange, 5 white, etc. — the rule is 90 max per color, 30 different colors total. For most Middle Tennessee homes (200–400 linear feet of roofline) that’s plenty. Our most complex Tennessee scene to date: a Williamson County Christmas display running 7 simultaneous colors with chase patterns across a 4-gable roofline.
Yes. From the color palette screen, long-press any color circle outside the gray line box and a window pops up that lets you slide through the color spectrum or type in specific RGB codes. Save that custom color to the circle for one-tap recall later. On install day at your Franklin, Brentwood, or Nolensville home, our crew walks you through this in person and pre-saves the most common Tennessee scenes — Titans navy, Vols orange, Predators gold, Vandy black-and-gold, plus your kids’ high school colors (Brentwood Academy, BGA, Franklin High, Ravenwood, Centennial, Independence, Page, Summit, MBA, Ensworth, USN, Harpeth Hall — whoever applies).
